Yak'éiyeexwsateení!

Welcome to the University of Alaska Southeast!

Thank you for taking time to explore our university, located here in spectacular Southeast Alaska. Whether you visit us in Juneau, Ketchikan, or Sitka, you will be surrounded by some of the most exquisite environments on earth! Our communities are located where towering mountains, magnificent icefields, misty coastal rainforests, and glacially-fed rivers and lakes meet some of the richest and most productive oceanic habitats in the world. Southeast Alaska is definitely one of the most beautiful places on earth, filled with opportunities for adventure!

We are proud of our mascot, Spike, the majestic humpback whale. Not only do these incredible creatures wander in the waters that surround us, connecting all of our ecosystems through their daily activities, they are also symbolic of our broader impact and connections, which reach far beyond our campuses. We also honor the Indigenous peoples who have stewarded these lands and waters for time immemorial. The history, culture, art, economies, and languages of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples are deeply interwoven into our studies, experiences, and spaces.

Our goal is to create an environment in which each individual feels a deep sense of belonging, is accepted for exactly who they are, and has the support needed to succeed. We love teaching students and, as a small university, we have the pleasure of getting to know each and every student personally. Whether our students meet us in person or online, our teaching is deepened by our commitment to hands-on learning. Students have opportunities to work alongside our faculty on world-class research in the lab and outdoors, creative activities, and scholarship.

They are also connected to the workforce through internships, fellowships, are partnerships in Southeast Alaska and across the state. Our graduates are highly successful in finding jobs after graduation. They find employment in a wide variety of fields, including marine biology, business, environmental science, communications, marine transportation, mariculture, mining, public administration, education, and healthcare.

We are also engaged with communities all across the country and are connected globally through our collaborations with universities such as Finland, Japan, the Czech Republic, and even Greece! As members of UArctic, a collaborative network of universities and colleges in the circumpolar arctic dedicated to bringing research and education together, we contribute to the global knowledge of the far North. Students can also explore our exchange programs, which can take them to universities all across the country and all over the world.

UAS is a unique and unforgettable place to grow and learn. Each day, I am grateful to be here and I welcome you!
